PhD position Single-molecule nanopore sensors for clinical analysis (1.0 FTE)

A PhD position is available in single-molecule nanopore analysis for continuum sensing in patients with heart failure. This position is a collaboration between the group of Giovanni Maglia at the University of Groningen in the field and Kevin Damman at the University Medical Center Groningen.

Biological nanopores are an exciting new class of biosensors, which found practical application is in single-molecule DNA sequencing and single-molecule analysis. The aim of this PhD project is to develop a sensor for the continuous monitoring of natriuresis in patient with heart failure. The candidate will be responsible of developing new nanopores for measuring sodium in urine in patients with heart failure.

Two backgrounds and skillsets are be required this project:

1) The candidate might have expertise in protein engineering and molecular biology. A wide variety of problems will be tackled, which will require designing nanopore sensors, model protein substrates, engineering enzymes. The nanopores will be tested using single-molecule electrophysiology techniques.

2) Alternatively, the candidate has expertise in engineering or physics and will be responsible of developing a nanopore device that will be interfacing with urine sample. The candidate will develop stable membranes for sampling urine sample and nanofluidic devices to deliver the sample to the nanopores.

The successful applicant has:

• a Master degree in one of the following expertise: molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, Engineering, or related disciplines
• a good command of English (oral and written)
• enthusiastic and a team player.

Proficiency in complex data analysis will be an advantage but it is not a requirement.


Contractduur: 12 months.

In accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

• a salary of € 2,541 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 3.247 gross per month in the fourth and final year
• a holiday allowance of 8% of gross annual income
• an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance
• a minimum of 29 holidays and additional 12 holidays in case of full-time employment
• a full-time position (1.0 FTE).

The successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next three years is to be expected. A PhD training program is part of the agreement and the successful candidate will be enrolled in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering.
