Organisation

University of Groningen

The University of Groningen is a research university with a global outlook, deeply rooted in Groningen, City of Talent. Quality has been our top priority for over four hundred years, and with success: the University is currently in or around the top 100 on several influential ranking lists.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) is the largest faculty within the University. We offer first-rate education and research in a wide range of science and engineering disciplines, from classical disciplines such as mathematics, astronomy and mechanical engineering, to interdisciplinary fields such as artificial intelligence, pharmacy and nanoscience . Our community has an open and informal character with students and staff from around the world.

The position will be embedded in the research unit Computational and Numerical Mathematics of the Bernoulli Institute, with strong collaborations with materials science, computer science and artificial intelligence.

The position will play a crucial role within the Centre “Groningen Cognitive Systems and Materials” (CogniGron). This is a unique research centre, where researchers from materials science, physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science and artificial intelligence work together to create self-learning materials that will perform the tasks that are now assigned to thousands of transistors and complex algorithms. We offer a challenging position in a unique world-class research environment, in which close collaborations between research groups with different expertise are encouraged.

Job description

We are looking for an Assistant/Associate/Full Professor who can strengthen our position in the field of Computational Mathematics.

We are looking for a researcher in Mathematics who will develop computational solutions of today’s highly complex problems of science and engineering, ranging from the design of suitable, computationally tractable models, to the mathematical analysis of numerical algorithms. Your contributions are to be geared towards improving the mathematical insight in this broad area of research. Diverse aspects of computational mathematics can be envisioned: algorithmic issues that are tied together by numerical mathematics, as well as challenging computational modelling issues that can be studied mathematically. Some of the most exciting challenges for applying numerical simulation as an innovative design tool are in the development of self-learning materials.

We are recruiting at the level of Assistant (tenure track), Associate (tenure) or Full Professor, depending on your profile.

As Assistant / Associate / Full Professor you will:

• set up and develop your own research line and research group
• supervise PhD students
• acquire external funding
• promote the societal relevance of your research
• teach in and contribute to the development of the degree programmes
• contribute to the organisation of the faculty, for example by participating in working groups and committees, in the domains of teaching, research and management.

At the stage of Assistant Professor, 60% of your time is for research, 30% for teaching activities and 10% for organisational tasks.

Requirements

We encourage you to apply if you have:

• a PhD degree in Mathematics or a related field
• at least two years of postdoctoral experience outside of The Netherlands, preferably in a different country than where you received your PhD (can be compensated for after the appointment via extended research visits abroad)
• a relevant international network
• excellent research qualities, as shown by a publication record in international peer-reviewed journals and proceedings of renowned conferences
• a well-founded and motivated application with an innovative research plan that matches the mission of the Groningen Cognitive Systems and Materials Center (see: http://www.rug.nl/fse/cognigron)
• a good track record in teaching, appropriate to your career stage
• demonstrable organisational competences
• cross-cultural sensitivity
• good command of spoken and written English.

And you are:

• a team player with good communication skills
• able to acquire substantial research grants from external sources
• willing to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (Dutch: BKO) within three years
• able to speak the Dutch language or motivated to speak it within five years.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary, dependent on qualifications and relevant work experience as follows:

For Assistant professor positions the salaries ranges from a minimum of € 3,746 gross per month (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 5,826 gross per month (salary scale 12) for a full-time position.

For the Associate professor positions, salaries range from € 5,190 (salary scale 13) up to a maximum of € 6,940 (salary scale 14) gross per month for a full-time position.

For the Full professor positions, the salaries range from € 5,749 up to a maximum of € 8,371 (salary scale Hoogleraar 2) gross per month for a full-time position.

The salary will show an annual increase within the scale. Additionally, the salaries include an 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus.
