Where are you going to work?
As a special professor, you will play an important role within the faculties of Philosophy (where you will be embedded in the Department of Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy) and Economics & Business (where you will join the section Business Ethics & Corporate Sustainability) at the University of Groningen, as well as in the interfaculty Centre for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.
There is extensive expertise available in areas such as organizational ethics, feminist philosophy, philosophy and policy, financial ethics, business ethics, sustainable banking, and finance. Research collaboration on the themes of the chair takes place in the Centre for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.
The Socrates Foundation is an institution that promotes the exchange of ideas on fundamental societal and cultural issues with which modern humanism is confronted, and the scientific reflection on the foundations and backgrounds of humanism. Establishing and maintaining humanist special chairs at Dutch universities contributes to this. The Socrates Foundation is a working foundation of the Humanist Association.
What are you going to do?
Within the faculties of Philosophy (0.2 FTE) and Economics & Business (0.0 FTE), and in collaboration with the Socrates Foundation, we are looking for a special professor in business ethics and ecological sustainability from a humanist perspective. This is a five-year appointment for 8 hours per week. Reappointment is possible after evaluation. The position is unpaid. The Socrates Foundation will provide an annual expense allowance to support your work.
This special chair offers a unique opportunity to work on innovative research and education focused on business ethics and ecological sustainability. The special professor will contribute to both education and research that is socially relevant and addresses the challenges of our time, such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, and the social responsibility of businesses. The role includes the regular duties of a professor in the areas of education and research. As a special professor at the RUG, you will fulfill the following tasks:
Education
Developing and providing education in the field of business ethics and ecological sustainability from a humanist perspective, with an emphasis on transdisciplinarity and innovation.
Specifically: offering an elective course for master’s students that is accessible to students from various faculties and external interested parties, including students from diverse backgrounds.
The education will focus on current normative issues related to business ethics and ecological sustainability.
Research
Conducting research that connects with major societal challenges, with a focus on the role of businesses and ecological sustainability.
Important research themes may include: the responsibility of businesses for ecological sustainability, the role of stakeholders such as shareholders and consumers, and the ethical aspects of sustainable entrepreneurship, ecological justice, human rights, climate, biodiversity, and finance.
Impact
Societal impact is crucial for Socrates chairs. This means, in particular, actively contributing to the public debate on the responsibility of businesses regarding sustainability issues.

You have:
- Academic background: a PhD in a relevant discipline (preferably philosophy), with expertise in business ethics and ecological sustainability.
- Research experience: a demonstrable research reputation or professional experience in a field relevant to the chair.
- Teaching experience: an excellent teacher with a passion for educational innovation and experience in teaching diverse groups of students.
- Leadership qualities: able to demonstrate inspiring academic leadership, with a coaching and inclusive approach, and an eye for diversity and collaboration.
- Humanist perspective: an ability to integrate humanist values in an open and non-dogmatic way in education and research, as well as in the broader public sphere.
- Collaboration: a willingness to collaborate with colleagues in the two participating faculties (Philosophy, Economics & Business) and the Centre for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.
