Job description
A 2-year postdoc position in computational social choice for digital democracy is available at the Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.
The position is embedded within the European project PERYCLES (Participatory dEmocRacY that sCaLES) led by Davide Grossi. The project is pursued by a large interdisciplinary consortium of digital democracy researchers as well as several societal partners. The successful applicant is expected to carry out research on the algorithmic foundations of digital platforms for large-scale deliberation. The research has the potential to directly inform the further development of existing platforms such as LiquidFeedback, whose developers are part of the project.
Knowledge of the Dutch language is not required.

Within the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), the Bernoulli Institute conducts research combining theoretical as well as practical aspects of three disciplines, namely Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. The position is embedded in the Multi-Agent Systems group of the department of Artificial Intelligence of the Bernoulli Institute.
Requirements
You should have a PhD degree in computer science, AI, mathematics, or a related discipline, with a research track record in computational social choice.
Conditions of employment
Contract length: 24 months.
The University of Groningen offers, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities;
- A salary from a minimum of €4.060 (salary scale 10.4) gross per month for a full-time position depending of relevant experience and training after obtaining the PhD
- A full-time position (1.0 FTE)
- A holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
- 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance
The position is limited to a period of 2 years. The starting date is flexible, but the successful candidate can ideally start around September 2025.
