Working Environment
The UMCG Departments of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery, are hiring a multitalented senior Postdoc Researcher/Assistant Professor, with Tenure Track qualifications or ambitions. You will be Director of our productive -multidisciplinary- research group, and expected to expand this internationally oriented research group to the next level. You will also play a key role in establishing the UMCG Applied Ai Accelerator (A3) Lab.
Job description
Versatility is key! As Director of our clinical research group, you need in depth knowledge of applied AI methodology in the fields of machine learning, computer vision and generative AI to supervise Computer Scientists, as well as mentor PhDs with a clinical background. In addition, you should be able to translate clinical questions from day-to-day medical practice, into a study question: to ultimately develop and test data driven decision support tools that can be applied clinically.
Research Activities
You will hit the ground running with 3 funded projects:
- Machine Learning driven decision support for Orthopaedic patients with hip arthrosis: LROI (Landelijke Registratie Orthopedisch Implantaten) – Dutch Registry of Orthopaedic Implants – to the Next Level funded. Data coupling between the Health Data Valley (HDV) Hospitals in the Northern Region (UMCG, Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden, Martini ziekenhuis Groningen, Isala Zwolle) and the Dutch Registry via Datapoort, to enrich data and train reliable prediction models for decision support in daily practice.
- Computer Vision: fracture recognition, classification and characterization to the next Level on Three-Dimensional Computer Tomography (3DCT). Current computer vision studies in the field of Orthopedic Trauma, are Convolutional Neural Network (CNNs) for plain radiographs. This research line aims to develop CNNs for 3DCTs in close collaboration with the Australian Institute of Machine Learning (AIML) and our UMCG 3D Lab.
- Generative AI: #nooitmeertikken is included in future plans of the Dutch Government (regeerakkoord), and the UMCG are leading (koplopers VWS) in a Team with ETZ and ErasmusMC, in a fast track validation mission to bring these applications to patient and caregiver. The UMCG Applied AI Group are building the IT infrastructure and scientifically validating these tools as part of the national RIGHT consortium.
Educational & Network Related Activities
Most importantly, we hope you enjoy the privilege (as much as we do) to train and mentor curious clinician-scientist. You should be able to manage and mentor multiple PhD students in parallel PhD trajectories. This includes our international PhD students in Double Degree Joint Doctorate PhD Programs at the Australian Institute of Machine Learning (AIML) and Flinders University Medical Centre in Australia. In addition, our overseas Team comprises multiple students in prestigious PhD Research Fellowships at Harvard Medical School (HMS) & Massachusetts General Brigham (MGB), as well as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Beth Israel (BI) Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, all part of the Harvard-Holland Combined Orthopedic Research Program.
Finally, you are expected to take the lead in structuring, expanding this very productive research group and bring it to the next level: both in scientific impact, as well as competitive grant writing.
Requirements
You qualify if you have proven excellent fund-raising capacity, international research coordination skills, and (Tenure Track) high impact scientific output. You will collaborate closely and report to the chair of Orthopedic Surgery, the Professor of Clinical Applications of AI, as well as the Board of Directors of the UMCG.
Your overall goal will be to help build a multidisciplinary ecosystem to facilitate scientific validation of clinical applications of AI.
In order to bring AI’s benefits to caregivers and patients, in a fast yet safe responsible manner.

Conditions of employment
A full-time appointment for three years (36 hours a week). Your salary will be a maximum of € 5.504,- gross per month (scale 10), depending on your qualifications and relevant experience, based on a full-time appointment. In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay, and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centres (CAO-UMC).
