Software Control Systems Engineer

Biomedical Sciences of Cells & Systems (BSCS)

The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and the University of Groningen (UG) are joining forces in proton therapy R&D with the aim to create a world-class research programme within the UMCG cancer research center. The AGOR-accelerator facility is a key infrastructure for the radiation biology and radiation physics research in this programme. Its research capabilities are currently being expanded with a new infrastructure for image guided preclinical radiation biology research.
The accelerator facility consists of the superconducting cyclotron that delivers beams of ions ranging from protons to bismuth with a variable energy to several experimental stations dedicated to specific types of experiments. The accelerator provides beams not only for medical research but also for research in subatomic physics and, in collaboration with industry, radiation hardness of electronic components and sensors. Our technical support team’s focus is to meet the current and future requirements of the local, national and international user community that depends on the accelerator and the associated experimental infrastructure for their research. The operation of the AGOR accelerator facility is monitored and controlled with a distributed digital control system based on PLC’s and various types of microcontrollers that communicate over different fieldbusses with a central database coupled to a graphical user interface.
We are now searching for a Control Systems Engineer who will take the responsibility for the reliable operation and further development of the AGOR control system. The candidate, while working in close collaboration with the electronics group, is expected to take a leading role in control systems development within our facility.

- Designs and develops software for data acquisition of experiments using e.g. VME hardware.
- Directs the refurbishment program to replace obsolescent control system hardware.
- Advises on the control systems issues related to procurement of equipment, such as power supplies.
- Supports colleagues in the development of PLC and LabVIEW applications for equipment control.
- Shares together with colleagues the responsibility to keep the control system operational 24/7 during accelerator operation.
