PhD position in Philosophy: Kant and/or Kantian Ethics (1.0 FTE)

This is a four-year fully funded PhD position, for a PhD candidate to carry out a research project of their own within the general area of Kant (ethics and/or political philosophy) and/or Kantian ethics. The PhD candidate will join a research group working on Kant’s practical philosophy and examining new philosophical avenues for defending a Kantian universalist ethics. Within that general area, they will carry out their own research.
The PhD candidate is expected to participate in activities of the research group, programme, present their research results at scholarly conferences, publish articles in leading international scholarly journals, and complete a dissertation within four years. The PhD candidate will be part of the Graduate School of the Faculty of Philosophy and work under the supervision of Prof. Pauline Kleingeld.
• MA degree in philosophy or in the history of political theory (or equivalent degree)
• strong background in one or more areas relevant to the programme (Kant’s political philosophy and/or ethics, Kantian ethics) and a promising research proposal
• ability to work independently and in a collaborative research environment
• ability to read German
• excellent command of English and excellent academic writing/presentation skills.
Conditions of employment
Contract length: 48 months.We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
• a salary of € 2,395 (salary scale PhD candidates) gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 3,061 gross per month in the fourth and final year, based on a full-time position
• a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income an 8.3% year-end bonus
• a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years. The position must result in a PhD thesis within the contract period. A PhD training programme is part of the agreement. There is a budget for research expenses such as conference travel.
