Job description
The Board of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) aims to create a new full-time chair in Macroeconomics.
The University of Groningen, founded in 1614, has a strong focus on research. We are in the top 100 of several influential university ranking lists. The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) is one of the largest faculties of the University with approximately 7,000 students. It has a strong international reputation and is AACSB and EQUIS accredited.
The Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance is the largest Department of the Faculty of Economics and Business with almost 150 staff members and over 20 PhD students. The research activities of the Department are embedded in the research programme Economics, Econometrics and Finance of FEBRI, the research school of FEB. The Department is an active and international research community, performing at the highest international level in terms of research and publications.
The Department is mainly involved in a Bachelor program in Economics and Business Economics and a bachelor program in Econometrics and Operations Research. In addition, it offers, among other things, master programs in Economics and Econometrics. In all these programs, macroeconomics courses are offered. Finally, the Department also actively participates in the Research Master program, offering macroeconomics courses to research master and PhD students.
Positioning and description of the chair
The chair in Macroeconomics is part of the Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance. The new professor will participate in the research program Economics, Econometrics and Finance of FEBRI. The chair will contribute to high-quality research and teaching in Macroeconomics. The new professor in Macroeconomics will play a central role in the Department and is expected to be the leading researcher within the Faculty with respect to macroeconomics by conducting independent research and by publishing in high-ranked international journals in the field of Macroeconomics.
Responsibilities and duties
The position encompasses the regular tasks of a full professor in teaching, research and being involved in management (as described in the so-called UFO profile). The tasks include but are not limited to:
• contributing to the Bachelor program in Economics and Business Economics, and the master program in Economics, including lecturing, course and program development and the supervision of bachelor and master theses. The professor is also expected to contribute to the selective Research Master program
• contributing to enhancing the international reputation and international network of the Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance, specifically in the area of macroeconomics
• supervising PhD students, mentoring junior staff members
• acquiring external funding from NWO, ERC, and other sources
• contributing to the research program of the Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance, and in particular to macroeconomic research within the program
• playing a prominent role in stimulating research collaborations with researchers in adjacent fields
• participating in the public macroeconomic debate on the national and/or international level; and
• willingness/ability to collaborate with colleagues in adjacent fields/departments and taking potential leadership roles within the department.
Requirements
We invite candidates with a strong track record in modern macroeconomic theory, but are also engaged in, or at least stimulated by, empirical and policy issues in macroeconomics, as well as empirical macroeconomists with a working knowledge of modern macroeconomic theory to apply. In terms of qualifications, the candidate:
• has a PhD degree
• has a broad and outstanding knowledge of macroeconomics, demonstrated by national and international academic publications in major macroeconomic and/or general interest journals
• is internationally recognized as an authority in the field of macroeconomics, e.g. as demonstrated by memberships of editorial boards of journals in the field and has a strong international academic network
• contributes with her/his/their research to society
• has excellent teaching abilities, both at the undergraduate and post-graduate level, and experience in curriculum development
• has experience in supervising PhD students and mentoring staff members
• provides leadership, motivation and supervision to other staff members and has strong management qualities, evidenced by previous management roles
• actively contributes to creating a positive climate within a department and/or faculty
• has proven to have excellent funding acquisition skills; and
• has a relevant national and international network, which may include connections to national, foreign and supra-national governmental institutions, international financial organizations, and the corporate world.
These requirements are related to the duties of the professor.
Conditions of employment
The chair is a full-time position at the level of full professor. We offer a salary depending on qualifications and work experience starting from € 6,099 (Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) to a maximum of € 10,721 gross salary per month for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favourable tax treatment may apply to Non-Dutch applicants.
