Werkomgeving

The UMCG Particle Therapy Research Center (PARTREC) is a research center that is part of the departments of Radiotherapy (RT) and Biomedical Science of Cells and Systems (BSCS) of the UMCG. Its research is focused on the field of proton radiation therapy of cancer and radiobiology, and the facility is being extended with the extensive funding from Dutch Cancer Society (KWF). Part of this research center is the AGOR cyclotron with which protons can be accelerated, offering the possibility to carry out important preclinical research with protons and other ion beams used for new treatment techniques to irradiate tumors. PARTREC is also available to provide services to companies including radiation hardness tests of detectors or components of systems for spaceflight, aeronautics and other applications.

Functiebeschrijving

As an operator, you operate the cyclotron for researchers who want to carry out an irradiation with accelerated particles, including MeV protons. For this you will learn how to maintain and operate the cyclotron and how to solve malfunctions on various systems that are needed to keep the cyclotron running. You will be exposed to operating and maintaining water cooling, compressed air and vacuum systems as well as interacting with a large array of electronics and various power supplies that are mainly used for large magnets or electrostatic lenses. In addition, dependent on your background knowledge and interest, you will be involved in the development of technical components for the cyclotron and beamlines, electronics or software development for the control of the cyclotron. This role will make a major contribution to enabling state-of-the-art preclinical research for radiotherapy and in particular proton therapy.
