Surgical Assistants for the Surgery Organization

Operatieve Zorg Organisatie

Werkomgeving

The UMCG Surgery Department (OZO) is a dynamic environment where various disciplines provide pre-, peri- and post-operative care to adult patients as well as children. As an important part of the UMCG, the OZO is closely involved in our ever-changing surgical care.

The profession of surgery assistant at the UMCG is a very dynamic one, especially because of the highly complex care and a wide variety of procedures, so no day and no procedure is the same! As a surgical assistant you work in one of our 28 operating theatres. You will work in an ambitious environment, where innovation and development are key.

The UMCG is located within walking distance of the Grote Markt, in the middle of the bustling university city of Groningen, surrounded by its beautiful Ommelanden. With 13,000 employees, we are the largest employer in the North and we are proud of it. As part of our sound staffing policies and good fringe benefits, we offer many internal training opportunities and highly valued employee benefits.

Functiebeschrijving

As a surgical assistant you will work within the Surgery Department (OZO). After an induction period, you are set to work in one of the dedicated teams. Here, you can further develop your skills in the field of one or more specialties and there are plenty of opportunities for you to do so. Every day, you will work together with many different colleagues, such as anaesthesiologists, surgeons, anaesthesia assistants and surgical assistants. You will try to anticipate obstacles in surgical procedures, even if they happen unexpectedly. Few procedures are standard. That is why the necessary thinking along is expected of you.

In addition, there are various working groups and task forces you can be part of. Helping students, trainees and new employees is also part of the daily activities. By working on a small scale in sectors and in dedicated teams, we promote collaboration and create a pleasant working environment.

Quality is an important spearhead within the OZO and we are currently working on developing this further by means of the principle of ‘clinical governance’. The idea is for professionals to be encouraged as much as possible to work from their intrinsic motivation to provide quality and safety. We are currently working on a new building that will also house the outpatient clinics and where there will be closer collaboration than before. In view of this, working groups have been formed to help think about the design of the new OZO.
