Job description

Within the Department of Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior (HRM/OB; Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Groningen, The Netherlands), a full-time position (0.8-1.0 FTE) is vacant for a career track Assistant Professor in HRM/OB, with a focus on the theme “Leadership and governance”. The assistant professor should have an interest in multidisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary research within this theme.

Faculty of Economics and Business
The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) of the University of Groningen (UG) empowers and connects students, academics and external stakeholders to have a joint positive impact on regional, national and global economic and business challenges in science and society. It is our mission to offer excellent education and to execute excellent and impactful research.

This position is part of an ambitious government investment initiative in the Social Sciences and Humanities (www.sectorplan-ssh.nl), translated within FEB into the thematic interdisciplinary area of Leadership and Governance, as outlined in the Faculty’s Strategic Plan for 2021-2026.

Leadership and Governance Theme
FEB has recognized five societally relevant and strategic themes in research, education, and for creating impact. One of these themes is “Leadership and Governance,” which focuses on leadership processes and governance issues in organizations. Example topics include leadership and digitalization or the governance of diversity issues. The assistant professor is expected to contribute to teaching and research within this theme, and should focus especially on the relation between leadership/governance and digitalization.

Department of HRM/OB
We are a highly regarded and productive research group. Our cutting edge (inter)disciplinary research is currently built around the themes of diversity, teams, innovation, leadership, health, and (un)ethical behavior and is regularly published in top tier (management) journals. We use a large variety of research methods (using field, experimental, and archival data) and deal with applied, as well as fundamental research questions.

The Faculty possesses very good research facilities. Faculty members have an excellent network in industry, providing access to (industry funded) organizational field research. To facilitate access to industry, we have a leading role in the center of expertise HRM/OB (https://www.rug.nl/hrm-ob/) and the interdisciplinary center of expertise “In the lead” (https://www.rug.nl/inthelead/). The department has an internationally oriented work environment with collaboration and exchange with leading universities around the world.

The department currently consists of approximately 18 academic staff members, 15 PhD candidates, and 3 support staff members.

Our department contributes to several degree programs at the Bachelor and Master level and to the Research Master of the graduate school (FEB research institute). We are responsible for a one-year English spoken MSc-HRM program.

Requirements

To qualify, you:

- have a PhD degree in HRM/OB or a related discipline
- work on topics related to “leadership and governance”
- are an excellent researcher and author of publications in international top journals
- are willing to contribute to and develop the theme “Leadership and Governance” within the faculty and contribute to multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary research and teaching in this area
- have a relevant international academic network
- have excellent teaching skills: you are an enthusiastic and effective lecturer, have knowledge of empirical methods, didactics, and understanding of teaching and assessment methods
- have a University Teaching Qualification or are willing to obtain this qualification
- have organizational qualities and excellent communication skills
- have good interpersonal skills and the ability to successfully work both individually and in a team.

Conditions of employment

Contract length: 18 months.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

- a salary depending on qualifications and work experience, starting from a minimum of € 3,974 gross per month (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 6,181 gross per month (salary scale 12) for a fulltime position
- a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income and an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance, as well as participation in a pension scheme for employees. For employees moving to The Netherlands, a fiscal facility pertaining to extraterritorial costs, the 30% facility, may be applicable if the rules of Dutch tax law permit this. Finally, a fulltime position will entitle you to 328 hours of leave per year.

Career track positions at the Faculty of Economics and Business are permanent positions subject to a tenure decision after eighteen months. Research time is 50% during the first six years, and promotion is conditional on the pre-specified set of criteria documented for the career track. Afterwards, it is allocated according to regular faculty procedures (comparable to US research schools). The vacancy comprises a fulltime position at the level of Assistant Professor, but an 0.8 or 0.9 FTE appointment is possible as well, based on the preferences of the candidate.

Starting date of the position is negotiable, but we foresee that it starts between January 2024 and September 2024.
