The research consortium “Rational points: new dimensions” is a research group on the arithmetic of rational points based at the Bernoulli Institute of the University of Groningen, the Mathematical Institute of Leiden University and the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University.
The mathematical community in the Netherlands is tight-knit. The consortium members interact regularly with experts at universities other than those involved in the consortium, such as the University of Amsterdam, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and Radboud University in Nijmegen. These interactions are also facilitated by the monthly Intercity Number Theory Seminar, the Intercity Geometry Seminar, the twice-annual DIAMANT Symposium, and the twice-annual GQT School and Colloquium. We also keep in touch with our colleagues in Belgium through the “Getaltheorie in het Vlakke Land” seminar and the Belgian-Dutch Algebraic Geometry Seminar.

The research consortium “Rational points: new dimensions” funded by an NWO Open Competition ENW - XL grant offers a postdoc position in coding theory with algebraic geometry techniques based at the University of Groningen.
As a postdoc, you will contribute to a project in algebraic geometry codes on surfaces and higher dimensional varieties in the context of the research program “Rational points: new dimensions”and have ample freedom to carry out your own research line. You will be part of a collaborative research team led by Martin Bright, Valentijn Karemaker, Ronald van Luijk, Steffen Müller, Marta Pieropan, and Cecília Salgado. There is a light teaching load associated to this position.
The successful applicant has:
- a completed PhD in mathematics before the starting date of the position
- a background in coding theory, and a previous experience with algebraic geometry codes
- a working proficiency in English, knowledge of the Dutch language is not required.
Conditions of employment
Contract length: 24 months.You will be employed by the University of Groningen. You will work together with Cecília Salgado, Valentijn Karemaker, and Steffen Müller, and you will have regular interactions with all consortium members, for instance via our monthly seminars.
Each of the three consortium institutions has a very active algebraic geometry and number theory research group: Groningen, Leiden, Utrecht. You will have ample opportunity to participate in events organised by the consortium as well as other national events. Funding is also available to support travel to conferences and workshops abroad.
We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:
- a full-time (1.0 FTE) postdoc position of 2 to 4 years
- starting date September 1, 2023, or a later date upon agreement
- a full-time gross salary ranging from € 3,557 to € 4,670 gross per month (scale 10)
- benefits including 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus
