Job description

The position combines research on speech and/or speech technology and teaching in the Information Science degree programmes, and the Erasmus Mundus Research Master “Language and Communication Technology”. Teaching responsibilities will include, for example, general programming courses and the supervision of BA- and MA-theses. Your research will be embedded in the Computational Linguistics research group of the Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG, https://www.rug.nl/let/clcg), in particular in the Speech Lab Groningen (SLG, https://www.speechlabgroningen.nl). In the SLG, research is conducted on speech using both advanced computational and experimental approaches, mostly focusing on minority languages and disordered speech (such as Parkinson’s disease). The SLG has state-of-the-art (computational) equipment available for use, including a dual-A100 Nvidia GPU server, three electromagnetic articulographs, a (basic) ultrasound tongue imaging device, and the one-of-a-kind mobile laboratory SPRAAKLAB (http://www.rug.nl/let/spraaklab) to collect acoustic and articulatory data in the field. Candidates whose research dovetails with that of the Speech Lab Groningen, may help supervise SLG PhD students. Furthermore, within the CLCG there are ample opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations. To fund your own innovative research line, you are expected to acquire external research funding.

Requirements

In addition to a number of basic requirements set by the University of Groningen, such as excellent social and communication skills, presentation skills, coaching skills and a results-oriented attitude, we are looking for candidates with:

- a PhD in the field of (Computational) Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science or a comparable field with a focus on the investigation and analysis of speech (articulation) and/or speech technology
- a strong quantitative / computational background and a solid track record on speech and/or speech technology
- language proficiency in English at C1 level, and for non-native speakers: working knowledge of Dutch (B2) within three years after appointment
- relevant research experience regarding speech and/or speech technology, ideally dovetailing with the research currently conducted in the Speech Lab Groningen (for example, dialectometry, speech articulation, speech technology for minority languages, speech articulation in disordered populations, et cetera)
- relevant teaching experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Candidates are expected to: have gained the University Teaching Qualification (in Dutch: BKO) or are prepared to do so within one year
- excellent social and communicative skills and the ability to work in groups.

Conditions of employment

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

- a salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of € 3,807 (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 5,922 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position
- excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees
- initially an appointment on a temporary basis for 18 months with the possibility of becoming a permanent position following a positive ‘Results and Development’ assessment. The position entails a contract combining 60% teaching tasks with 40% research-time. Favourable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants.

The faculty will facilitate you with obtaining the requested qualifications for teaching and the Dutch language within two years.
