The Faculty of Law
The Faculty of Law (https://www.rug.nl/rechten/) is a modern, (inter)nationally oriented institution which builds on a longstanding tradition of more than four centuries. The faculty has the ambition to measure itself with the best law faculties in Europe. It offers several (inter)national Bachelor and Master programmes and with more than 4.900 students and almost 400 staff members, the faculty forms a vibrant community. The European and Economic Law department
The European and Economic Law department of the University of Groningen is built around the first chair of European law in The Netherlands. The department strives for the highest level of research and education in all aspects of European law. The aim is to provide students of the Faculty of Law with a complete overview of European Union law and that of the European Convention on Human Rights. The emphasis is on the relationship between European law and the national and international legal systems. Within the framework of the research programme ‘Protecting European Citizens and Market Participants’ (https://www.rug.nl/rechten/onderzoek/groningen-centre-for-law-and-governance/protecting-european-citizens-and-market-participants?lang=en#:~:text=The%20research%20programme%20Protecting%20European,Union%20and%20other%20European%20international), staff of the European and Economic Law department have built up a strong reputation for publishing in national and international top journals.

The European and Economic Law group is an enthusiastic team consisting of younger and more senior staff, with a mixed Dutch and international background. It covers the whole spectrum of European law.

Job description

The postdoc position forms part of the interdisciplinary EU Horizon 2020 project Envisioning a New Governance Architecture for a Global Europe (ENGAGE) which is implemented together with 12 other academic institutes in Europe.

The postdoc will be able to do independent research on parts of the project, in particular the work-packages related to the EU’s foreign, security and defence policy (CFSP and CSDP), will partly manage the project, and will actively participate in this international network.

Requirements

We are looking for an early-career scholar who has a strong research record, has knowledge of EU external relations law and the EU’s foreign and security policy, and is interested in working in an interdisciplinary project. The candidates meet the following requirements:

- PhD degree in European Law, preferably focusing on EU external relations law and policy and Common Foreign and Security Policy
- relevant publication record demonstrating your ability to publish international academic publications
- clear interest in working together with colleagues all over Europe
- ability to manage collaborations with partners at the other participating institutions
- ability to communicate verbally and in written form in English
- ability to work independently and manage joint research activities
- team player with good communication skills.

Conditions of employment

Contract length: 24 months.

We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

● a salary of a minimum of € 3,353 and a maximum salary of € 3,746 gross per month on a full-time basis in accordance with your experience
● a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income and an 8.3% year-end bonus
● 232 holiday hours per calendar year for full-time employment
● participation in a pension scheme for employees
● a temporary appointment for a specified period of 2 year.

Preferable starting date is 1 August 2021
