The research group Neurobiology is part of the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES) in the Faculty of Science and Engineering of the University of Groningen (http://www.rug.nl/research/gelifes/).

Job description

Within the Neurobiology group of the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES) at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, a position as full stack software developer is available.

The position is embedded in an international research programme under the EU IMI (innovative medicine initiative) umbrella. The programme named PRISM (Psychiatric Ratings using Intermediate Stratified Markers) is aimed at providing quantitative biological measures to facilitate the discovery and development of new treatments for social and cognitive deficits in AD, SZ, and MD.

One mode of attempting to discover biological markers is the collection of behavioural data through personal mobile devices. Specifically developed for this programme, an initiative named “BEHAPP” is currently responsible for collecting behavioural data through smartphones of participants.

The selected candidate will perform software development tasks in the domain of mobile device based passive behavioural monitoring. The aim is 1) to help reason about and extend on the mobile application to generate data that can be descriptive of explorative and communicative acts of participants and 2) to extend on back-end services aimed at providing researchers with valuable insights based on the data collected for their studies.

Research environment
Research will be performed in the Neurobiology group at the Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life Sciences (GELIFES), which comprises several other strong, internationally recognized research groups in the field of evolutionary biology and behavioural neuroscience.

Requirements

The successful candidate has experience in software development using MVC based web application frameworks, mobile development kits and JavaScript based front-end frameworks. More importantly, the candidate is confident in his / her ability to absorb (most likely) new and multiple different technology stacks and their corresponding programming languages.

Other preferred traits:
• good command of English (oral and written)
• team player.

Conditions of employment

Contract length: 12 months.

The University of Groningen offers an appointment for one year with the option of a one-year extension conditional on satisfactory performance. The job is full-time (38h/week) with a maximum salary of € 3,358.- (salary scale 9, step 5 Dutch Universities) gross per month for a full-time position, depending on qualifications and work experience.
