brings experience of teaching at an international school, preferably in the age range between 11 and 16.
has pedagogical and didactical knowledge of (Human) Geography and History in international or bilingual secondary schools and is familiar with one or more widely-used international curricula (e.g., IB-MYP, English National Curriculum, IMYC, American Common Core).
has a sustained interest in current developments in International Education and particularly in the didactics of Social Studies, Geography and History. Expertise in curriculum development is essential.
values an approach to events and developments from different perspectives and makes sure this is reflected in their teaching.
has abroad experience in supporting groups of students with diverse backgrounds and varying language skills.
is dedicated to research-based practice.
Where will you be working
ITESS is a new, small but expanding international community, located on a relatively small campus in Groningen, the Netherlands, a lively, old student town. We value students’ ideas and input towards the programme and the community.
Within ITESS all student teachers have a shared programme and a separate programme which focuses on teaching Social Studies: Geography and Social Studies: History. The Social Studies student teachers have separate programmes for Geography and History, the Social Studies courses are taught in mixed groups. The Social Studies lecturer is expected to help deliver and co-create curricula for Social Studies: Geography and Social Studies: History and for Social Studies in the context of Design-Based Education. The new colleague shows a continuous desire to grow and learn as part of a friendly, dedicated and increasingly international team of higher education professionals.
What will you be doing
Your task will be the planning, delivering and reviewing of learning sessions in the field of Social Studies: Geography and Social Studies: History at the Groningen campus. You will be part of a year team and you will be mentoring a group of student teachers and be their supervising lecturer during Teaching Practice at international schools across the world.
In ITESS, we assess students’ work in the form of regular tests, papers, presentations, events, logbooks, portfolios and other conceptual designs and creative testing formats.
Master’s Degree or higher in teaching in the field of Geography and/ or History, preferably including clear components of Social Studies.
A teaching license and/ or teaching experience in the ‘other’ field.
Substantial secondary school experience in international education.
Preferably experience in higher education/curriculum development.
Profound pedagogical and didactical knowledge, including the use of ICT & technology.
Preferably knowledge of current developments in education and the field of Social Studies.
A good command of English.
The salary, depending on age and experience, is maximum € 5.127,39 (scale 11 cao hbo) gross per month for a full-time job, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus. A one-year contract will initially be offered.
