Who are we looking for

For this position, we are looking for a PhD candidate with an MSc degree in technology, computer science or related fields. 

Where will you be working

MIWB, the maritime academy of NHL Stenden, initiated the research project TODDIS, which is the acronym of Transferring Operational Data into Design Information for Ships. This project started in January 2020, with a lead-time of four years. 

TODDIS focuses on the collection of operational data from ships, their analysis and the reworking into a generalized and aggregated form that is useful for the design of ships. Where the ship designer's toolbox previously consisted of model tests, direct calculations and empirical methods with a limited (and often outdated) statistical basis, the aim of TODDIS is to add design tools that can estimate the behavior and performance of a new vessel on the basis of recent and large-scale measurements. Another, and possibly even more prominent applications of TODDIS tools is in automated and optimizing (ship) design environments. The project consortium consists of about ten (Dutch) maritime institutes and companies, which will work collaboratively on these six work packages:

  1. Sensors, data collections, their transport and their integrity
  2. From data to tools
  3. Tools to support the ship's operation
  4. Tools to support ship design
  5. Knowledge development for a course Advanced numerical methods for shipping and ship design
  6. Legal boundary conditions 

What will you be doing

Integrated in this research will be a four-year PhD trajectory, which will be carried out in collaboration with and under the auspices of Delft University of Technology, faculty Maritime Technology. This programme covers all work packages, but will emphasize on work packages 1, 2 and 4, as indicated above. The research hypothesis, on which the PhD research is based, will be drawn up after the literature review and in consultation with the consortium partners. A tentative research hypothesis might be: "Large-scale data collection about the ship and its environment makes, after processing and aggregation, the design of ships more efficient and effective", while the related (also tentative) research questions might be as follows:

  • Are emerging communication technologies that focus on IoT usable on board of ships, and do they hadd value?
  • Which of the available metamodeling methods are suitable for our purposes, possibly after adaptation?
  • In which way can the developed design tools be used by the ship designer, not only as a person, but also when embedded in an automated design environment? 

This research will cover more than eighty percent of the labour. The remainder of the tasks consists of educational tasks at MIWB, mainly related to research.
