Job description
As a materials technology technician you will be responsible for the daily operational, maintenance and safety aspects in Materials Processing, Analytical and Microscopic Characterization labs. You will support researchers as well as students in the setup and execution of experiments, and instruct laboratory practicums for bachelor curricula. The independent conduct of small research projects for third parties is also part of your work. The successful candidate for this position must have a broad background in materials processing technology, electron microscopy, failure analysis, the characterization of materials and extensive knowledge in the operation and troubleshooting of key pieces of laboratory apparatus and electronics.

Primary job responsibilities:
• manage all laboratory assets. Ensuring all equipment is maintained, calibrated and serviced on time
• operate and train new students (bachelor, master & PhD) on all apparatus
• manage, develop, review and ensure conformance to all Laboratory risk assessments and best practices
• technical competence should include the following aspects:
1. 3D laser printing, laser processing techniques, physical vapor deposition
2. Mechanical - bending, tension, compression, hardness, adhesion, peel and fatigue etc.
3. Environmental - corrosion, thermal, chemical and cyclical testing etc.
4. Electron and optical microscopic characterization
5. Expert knowledge of grinding, polishing and etching a variety of materials.

You have at least a Bachelor degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Applied Physics, or Mechanical Engineering, with some background in the other field and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience and hands-on expertise in the field of materials processing and microscopy. You should be familiar with setting up and conducting own experiments in the above-mentioned research fields. Detailed knowledge of the different processing and analytical equipment and procedures is a must. You are a highly motivated and self-reliant person; you possess excellent English communication skills and organization skills. You can establish and maintain cooperative working relationships in a team-based environment to achieve common goals. Applicants who have skills in one or more of the areas of Electron Microscopy, 3D Laser Printing, Laser Processing Technology, or Thin Films and Coatings, have an advantage.

Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary scale, depending on your experience and qualifications, starts from a minimum of € 2,431 gross per month and extends to a maximum of € 3,671 gross per month, based upon the job profile of Research and Education Officer (scale 8-9 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
