The Department of Economics, Econometrics & Finance is an active and international research group, consisting of approximately 100 people. Department members work in theoretical as well as applied research. Central research themes are among others (applied) econometrics, finance, banking, health, ageing and pensions, microfinance, behavioural and experimental economics, and industrial organisation. Approximately 25% of the department members is non-Dutch, support staff is used to communicating in English. More than 80% of the PhD students are non-Dutch. Members of the department have recently published in a wide range of top journals, such as American Economic Review, Economic Journal, Journal of Business and Economics Statistics, International Economic Review, Journal of Financial Economics, RAND Journal of Economics, Review of Economics and Statistics, and Review of Financial Studies.
The department is responsible for central courses in two bachelor programmes: the independent BSc programme in Econometrics and Operations Research, and the Economics and Business Economics BSc programme. In addition, the department is responsible for the MSc programme in Economics, the MSc programme in Finance and is involved in the Econometrics, Operations Research and Actuarial Science MSc programme. All these BSc and MSc programmes are taught in English. The department also participates in the selective honours programme for BSc students, and the challenging 2-years research master programme, which is intended for students aiming at a PhD.
Currently the department has four vacant tenure track positions:
• two positions in quantitative economics; the candidate has excellent quantitative research skills with application to one of the areas of interest to the department
• two positions in finance; preferably specialization in corporate finance and/ or asset pricing, but we also invite qualified researchers interested in closely related areas, like banking, international finance, and development finance to apply.
Candidates are expected to strengthen the position of the Department of Economics, Econometrics & Finance. The department offers a dynamic academic environment with excellent research facilities.
Candidates have the ability to conduct high quality, original research and to publish in high-ranked international journals. He/she has a track record of outstanding academic research and is internationally recognized. Time for research is allocated according to standardized faculty procedures, which guarantee 50% time for research during the tenure track period. As to teaching, he/she has excellent teaching skills and contributes to the courses in the BSc and MSc programmes offered by the department, including the supervision of bachelor’s and master’s theses. Moreover, he/she might contribute to the two-year highly selective research master programme. He/she is also able to provide leadership, motivation and supervision and has management qualities.
We will interview in the London RES meeting (3-4 January 2017) and conduct Skype interviews during the first week of January.
To qualify candidates should have:
• PhD in Finance, Economics, Econometrics, or Quantitative Economics
• expertise in the above mentioned fields demonstrated by the ability (or the potential) to publish in the top-tier international academic peer-reviewed journals
• proven interest and ability in developing courses and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level and in mentoring students
• international network
• organizational qualities and excellent communication skills
• the potential to generate external funding for research projects.
Tenure track positions at the Faculty of Economics and Business are temporary positions subject to a tenure decision after the period of six years. Formal tenure track requirements include criteria with respect to research prominence, teaching and external funds raising activities. During the tenure track period, 50% of the position is reserved for research and 50% is devoted to teaching activities.
Conditions of employment
Contract length: 72 months.
The University of Groningen offers a salary depending on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 3,427 gross per month (salary scale 11 Dutch Universities) to a maximum of € 5,330 gross per month (salary scale 12) for a fulltime position for an assistant professor, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favourable tax treatment may apply to non-Dutch applicants. Candidates will be appointed for a period of six years. On the basis of a positive final evaluation in the sixth year of employment, candidates will be granted tenure. We expect candidates to start by August or September 2017.
