Academy Director Media Commerce & Entrepreneurship (MC&E)

Media Commerce & Entrepreneurship (MC&E) is an ambitious and innovative academy with growing study programmes, a number of which are listed as Top Rated Programmes in the HBO Keuzegids. The Academy wants to harness its expertise to be leading in the professional field, in line with our university of applied sciences' mission of pushing boundaries and developing talent. Newly formed as of 1 January 2024, the Academy trains students for a professional field that is in a state of flux due to all kinds of digital developments. Contemporary issues demand new ways of working together and living together. Knowledge ages and renews rapidly, and technological innovations often transform the world in which we live. Innovation is vital for organisations to maintain or create a position in a rapidly changing society.

Our educational concept Design Based Education (DBE) enables us to anticipate this changing world with all its challenges. A multidisciplinary approach to education, research and collaboration with the professional field helps us to contribute to a vital economy and broad prosperity in the regions in which we are active, based on co-creation. As Academy Director, your challenge lies in actively advancing this, making the difference in terms of the major societal issues in which the Academy engages.

Academy of Media Commerce & Entrepreneurship (MC&E)
The Academy of Media, Commerce & Entrepeneurship comprises the clusters Creative Business, Communication, Commercial Economics and Entrepreneurship & Retail Management. It offers 4 bachelor's degrees, 4 associate degrees and 2 master's degrees. A number of study programmes are also offered as a work and study option. The Academy has 2 professorships: the Professorship of Organisations and Social Media, and the Professorship of Transformational Media. In addition, the Academy uses the Center for Entrepreneurship. This economic domain is home to approximately 3,050 students and 230 employees at our locations in Emmen, Leeuwarden and Amsterdam. Some of the minors at the Academy are offered at our Grand Tour locations in South Africa, Thailand and Bali.

Our ambitions and challenges
To continue to meet demand from the professional field, MC&E is working on a future-proof portfolio, the enhancement of applied research and the further internationalisation of the study programmes.

The Academy and the other academies want to play a prominent role in the Northern region and boost their contribution to both national and international networks. At NHL Stenden, we are working on a new organisational structure for the university of applied sciences. Existing academies that teach students in the same domain are jointly working towards an academy to be newly formed under dual directorship. We are convinced that combining forces will help us make even more impact in our regions and beyond. The Academy of MC&E has already completed this process and was newly formed as of 1 January 2024. Integration of the teams is ongoing.

Part of this integration is the further development towards result-responsible teams. These teams own the day-to-day educational process and are given free reign to organise this properly.

In line with this, NHL Stenden has a horizontal organisational structure with no more than three management levels. Managers facilitate team learning and performance in a way that fits within our 'servant leadership' concept, i.e. the motivation to lead by providing direction and serving the development of employees and teams.

Academy Director tasks and responsibilities
As Academy Director, you share full responsibility for the new domain with your fellow Academy Director. Collegiality, professionalism and trust are important basic principles and values for mutual cooperation. Together, you work on translating social issues into curricula, in conjunction and coordination with the other teams and together with external regional, national and international parties. In doing so, you help build our innovative educational concept and create an attractive educational offering that continues to meet the demand from the professional field. You can look beyond the boundaries of your own discipline, establishing connections with the other academies within the university of applied sciences for further collaboration. As a director, you exemplify what we as a university of applied sciences stand for: high-quality education and research.

  • You provide direction for the formation and development of result-responsible teams (RVTs) at the academies and you drive collaboration with other educational teams at the university of applied sciences, for example through crossover workshops.
  • You are a role model for the team managers in developing a servant leadership style.
  • You are responsible for a socially safe environment for students and staff.
  • You encourage cooperation between professors and study programmes, as well as external collaborations and connections of the university of applied sciences. You are regionally, nationally and internationally oriented in this respect.
  • You are aware of what is going on in the teams, with the students, in the organisation and in the professional field and, as such, are the connecting factor.
  • You represent the Academy and its locations both internally and externally and contribute to establishing a national and international profile.
  • As dual director, you are part of the NHL Stenden deliberation council, which discusses strategic matters and advises on policy.
