NHL Stenden Hotel Management School (HMS) 

HMS is an international institute with approximately 3000 students and over 100 employees. The School offers a ‘real world’, internationally oriented educational programs, designed to prepare students for operational and management positions in the hospitality industry, and other service related companies. HMS programmes are delivered at national and international branch campuses.  

HMS strongly believes that its graduates, alongside the capacity to let other feel welcome, also develop knowledge, attitudes, and skills that will enable them to have a positive impact on tomorrow’s world. Consequently, HMS wishes to develop a dedicated path on sustainability applied to the hospitality and tourism sector. This development is supported by the professorship Sustainability in Hospitality and Tourism at the Academy of International Hospitality Research (AIHR), the research unit of HMS. Moreover, sustainability is a pivotal topic in national, regional, and local policy on hospitality and tourism in the Netherlands. With this vacancy the HMS aims at strengthening its team of sustainability experts and lecturers also to cope with the increasing demand from the government and the sector. 

To strengthen the sustainability expertise and support the development of the dedicated educational line in sustainability, the HMS is looking for, on a temporary basis with the possibility for extension, for a junior and a senior lecturer Sustainability in Hospitality and Tourism for 1,0 FTE for each position. 

The position 

This particular position of lecturer incorporates the following tasks: 

  • Develop (senior) and support the development (junior) of a dedicated educational line (in DBE terms an atelier) for level 2 and 3 of the full time Bachelor program. 

  • Cover the role of expert including lecturing and conducting workshops (senior) and act as a facilitator (junior) for the atelier sustainability in hospitality and tourism. 

  • Lecturing and conducting workshops (senior) for the minor Future Proof Hospitality (Bachelor). 

  • Writing of a project proposal for externally founded projects with a focus on the local food offer in hospitality and its effect on attracting and retaining (foreign) tourism. 

  • Support the Research Group Sustainability in Hospitality and Tourism (junior and senior) and for the senior position, in collaboration with full members of the research group, write a project proposal for externally funded projects in one of the areas of research of the research group (behavioural informed interventions; circular economy; food & beverage). 

  • Co-ordination and organization. 

The Profile:

  • Possesses a MA degree and (for the senior position) preferably a PhD in a relevant area of expertise. 

  • Profound knowledge of sustainability principles and their implementation in the hospitality and tourism sector.  

  • Experience in designing curricula (senior). 

  • Experience in teaching is a pré for both the senior and junior position.  

  • Experience in research, preferably within hospitality and tourism focused organisations. 

  • Experience in writing project proposals for external funding is preferred (senior). 

  • Experience in and/or an established network with hotel/hospitality companies. 

  • Possesses an excellent command of written and spoken English and, preferably, also Dutch. 

  • Familiarity with Design Based Education (preferred). 

  • Holds a teaching qualification or is prepared to obtain one.  

  • Analytical, creative, independent, and enthusiastic. 

  • Is open to working (for short durations) at our campus sites abroad from time to time. 


  • Start: a.s.a.p. 

  • Suitably qualified applicants will be considered for the position of Lecturer. 

  • This position is at pay scale 11 (3.731,81 – 5.127,39) gross per month, depending on relevant experience, based on a full-time employment). The function is temporary for 2 years with the possibility of renewal.
