Our ideal candidate
Is enthusiastic, flexible, adaptable, has a good sense of humour and a passion for inspiring a new generation of international secondary school teachers.
Brings experience of teaching at a Dutch secondary school (vo or (v)mbo) and/or at an international school, preferably in the age range between 11 and 16.
Has a pedagogical and didactical knowledge of Geography in international or bilingual secondary schools and is familiar with one or more widely used international curricula (e.g., IB-MYP, English National Curriculum, IMYC, American Common Core) and the Dutch educational system.
Has a broad experience in supporting learners of Geography in groups of students with diverse backgrounds and varying language skills.
Has a sustained interest in current developments in International Education and particularly in the didactics of Social Studies /Geography. Expertise in curriculum development is essential.
Is dedicated to research-based practice and ideally has published work in the field of education and/or participated in research projects.
Where will you be working
ITESS is a new, small but expanding international community, located on a relatively small campus in Groningen, the Netherlands, a lively, old student town. We value students’ ideas and input towards the programme and the community. The Geography lecturer is expected to help deliver and co-create a curriculum in the context of Design-Based Education.
ITESS Geography is a new programme that will start in September 2020 with a small group of students from various parts of the world. The overall curriculum structure of the four-year bachelor programme has been designed. The details of the course units in higher years still need to be developed. The Tweedegraads Lerarenopleiding Aardrijkskunde is a well-established and highly rated bachelor programme at the Leeuwarden campus of NHL Stenden. The Dutch Geography programme is taught by a dedicated team of tried and trusted teacher educators.
What will you be doing
Your task will be the planning, delivering and reviewing of learning sessions in the field of Geography at the Groningen and Leeuwarden campuses. You will play a major role in developing the ITESS Geography programme. We assess students’ work in the form of essays, presentations and other conceptual designs and creative testing formats. You will be supporting the ITEps team in creating and reviewing curricular approaches and in developing the academic programme.
Master’s Degree or higher in the field of Geography, preferably including a clear component of Physical Geography.
Substantial secondary school experience in Dutch and/or international education, preferably
Preferably experience in higher education/curriculum development
Profound pedagogical and didactical knowledge, including the use of ICT & technology
Knowledge of current developments in education and the field of Geography
A good command of English and Dutch
The salary, depending on age and experience, is maximum € 4.892,31 (scale 11 cao hbo) gross per month for a full-time job, excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus. A one-year contract will initially be offered.
