Stefan Berger
Associate Professor @ University of Groningen
I am an Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at the University of Groningen and hold (executive) lecturer positions at the University of St. Gallen and the University of Bern. Prior to joining the University of Groningen, I helped build the Center for Future Leadership and Work at the University of St. Gallen, where I also obtained my PhD in Strategy and Management.
I research, teach, and consult on how organizations can design and lead work in ways that enable effective and sustainable collaboration. I structure my work around three themes:(1) New forms of organizing, including decentralized and team-based structures,(2) New forms of leading, including the interplay between leadership and artificial intelligence,(3) Managing change and innovation, with a particular interest in how organizations can manage the future-of-work transition.Funded by a Veni Grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO), I currently lead a project on the employee experience of dynamic team structures (https://www.nwo.nl/en/researchprogrammes/nwo-talent-programme/projects-veni/veni-2022).
My work has been published in leading international journals such as the Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, the Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Human Resource Management, and I serve as an editorial board member of the Journal of Organizational Behavior.
Much of my research is built through close, long-term collaboration with organizations. I enjoy working in co-creation with companies to study real challenges and translate insights into practical value. If you are interested in exploring a collaboration that benefits both your organization and my research, I am always happy to talk.
