New technological and engineering developments happen in rapid succession. Our society is constantly changing. For a university of applied sciences with nearly 150 years of experience, it is vital to keep up with and respond to all external developments. We are currently working on our organisation structure in this regard. Institutions offering similar education are now working towards setting up a new academy with two directors. By joining forces, we believe we can make an even greater impact in our regions and beyond. This also goes for the Technical Domain Academy, which will be established by 1 January 2025. A centre for expertise in six central fields, namely Maritime Studies, IT, Built Environment, Engineering, Life Sciences and Design, the academy aims to occupy a leading position and contribute to complex transitions that demand technological and engineering breakthroughs. The aim is to have an impact on strengthening innovation power and the involvement of professionals, both now and in the future, as well as the professional field and our education and research. This is line with our Design-based Education concept (DBE) and our institution's ambition to push boundaries and develop talent.
We are looking for a director to represent the Technical Domain Academy alongside an equally ranking co-director; someone with a strong network in and affinity for engineering and/or technology. Someone who steers a firm course and has vision in engineering/technology, education and research.
Technical Domain Academy
The Technical Domain Academy is to be formed from three academies in the Technical Domain: ICT & Creative Technologies (ICT&CT), Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz (MIWB), and Technology & Innovation (T&I), which provide ambitious and innovative programmes including some leading ones listed in the Guide to Higher Professional Education (HBO Keuzegids). The Emmen, Leeuwarden Rengerslaan, Leeuwarden Agora and Terschelling campuses offer 37 programmes ranging from Associate Degrees to Bachelor's and Master's levels, with capacity for about 3,500 students. It also has several Centres of Expertise and knowledge & training centres. About six hundred lecturer-researchers and 11 professors in eight Professorships teach and conduct research in the six central fields. We are currently looking at the following key areas for the research: Circular Plastics, Water Technology, Smart Manufacturing, Computer Vision & Data Science/ AI, Maritime IT Security, Maritime Law, Future Built Environment/ Integrated Area Development and Maritime Innovations.
Our ambitions and challenges
To strengthen our contribution to societal issues and transitions, the Technical Domain Academy is working on a future-proof portfolio, consolidating practice-oriented research and cementing professional connections in the region as well as both nationally and internationally. We tackle transitions from different perspectives, for example, from our ISA Lab, Data Science and AI, as well as from our School of Design.
We are working together towards setting up a new academy with two directors. Part of this integration will entail further steps towards establishing teams responsible for their own results. The teams "own" the daily teaching process as well the quality of teaching and research. Managers facilitate team learning and performance in line with our concept of "servant leadership".
Academy Director
You and your co-director will have combined integral responsibility for the continued formation of the new academy, sharing roles and responsibilities between you. Collegiality, professionalism and trust are important principles and values for mutual cooperation. Together you will work on social issues, both in research and teaching, in collaboration and coordination between teams and in cooperation with external parties (regionally, nationally and internationally). In doing so, you will continue to build on our innovative educational concept and attractive study programmes that continue to meet the demands of the professional field. In your connecting role, you will look beyond the boundaries of your own discipline and establish contacts inside and outside the organisation for further collaboration. And as representative of the Academy, you will be both visible and active in the professional field. Up to date with the latest developments, you will actively contribute to multidisciplinary collaboration in ecosystems.
Together with your co-director, you will guide the Academy's team leaders, professors and support network and represent the interests of all the Academy's campuses. You will encourage mutual cooperation and provide direction for the formation and development of teams responsible for their own results. You will be the point of contact for both lecturers and researchers in some of the six central fields. You will have responsibility for a number of cross-Academy strategic portfolios.

Depending on your experience, we are offering a gross monthly salary of up to EUR 8,698.65 (scale 15 of the collective agreement for higher professional education) for full-time employment, excluding an 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus.

- you will contribute to the continued development of a vision for quality education and practice-based research, carrying responsibility for their facilitation;
- you will represent both the Academy and its campuses both internally and externally, fulfilling your role with verve. You will have an impact on the Academy's profile, both nationally and internationally;
- in your role as co-director, you will participate in a meeting of Academy and service department Directors in which the service department Directors and Academy Directors discuss issues and initiate policy with the Executive Board at strategic level;
- you will be visible on the campuses in your portfolio and take an active interest in events and developments on them.

- has a Master's degree, relevant work experience in the engineering and/or technology sectors and experience in an organisation with sizable budgets and multiple cash flows;
- has extensive leadership experience in a complex organisation with highly skilled professionals;
- has played a key role in a change process within a large organisation and experience of team and organisational development;
- is a forceful lobbyist with a relevant leadership network at regional, national and preferably international level;
- has an excellent rapport with students and their lifestyles as well as practice-based teaching and research;
- has a good command of Dutch and English, both spoken and written.

- We will invite the final candidate for two interviews to determine whether there is a match. The first will be with the Academy's co-director at 3:15 p.m. on 22 October and the second will be with members of the Executive Board at 4:30 p.m. on the same day.
- The terms of employment meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday 24 October.
