Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated, open-minded, and creative Assistant Professor to commence as soon as possible. The position is based within the Department of Health Sciences. You will be part of an interdisciplinary and international group in Community and Occupational Health. Research and teaching activities aim towards the prevention of disease and the increase of health capacity in people and society. Within the Department of Health Sciences, multiple renowned research groups work in a dynamic and stimulating work environment. To maximize societal impact, our research typically seeks involvement of key stakeholders in the field of Community and Occupational Health, together with practitioners within Academic Collaborative Centers and policy makers.

Research
The candidate will be embedded in the research group on Work & Health. We contribute to more healthy working lives by conducting research on the prevention of work-related ill-health, sickness absence, work disability and early labour market exit. Special attention is paid towards the start and the end of the working life with a life course lens (prof. U. Bültmann) and vulnerable groups at the labour market (prof. S. Brouwer). Teaching
Our department provides academic education. We educate students to have a broad perspective on prevention, health promotion and health protection in medicine and in social-epidemiological research. The successful candidate will be engaged in teaching activities, including course design and teaching, testing, and evaluation, on behalf of undergraduate and graduate students. We seek a candidate recognized for teaching excellence, scholarly productivity, ability to work together in a varied group of teachers, and excellent oral and written communication skills.

Your key tasks as Assistant Professor:
- research, including publication/academic dissemination duties;
- grant writing for external funding;
- supervision of research of (PhD) students;
- active involvement in (re)designing courses, teaching and supervising students, testing, assessment and evaluation of teaching activities;
- research-based teaching;
- sharing knowledge with society.

Requirements

We are looking for a creative and passionate scientist with the following competencies and experience:
- You have a PhD-degree in health science, public health, epidemiology, social science, medicine or related sciences;
- You have an active interest in public and occupational health;
- Ability to work effectively with diverse teams within and outside the UMCG;
- Experience on grant writing and submission;
- Experience in fostering interdisciplinary research initiatives;
- Experience in training of PhD students;
- Teaching experience and in possession of the University Teaching Qualification UTQ/BKO) or willing to obtain this;
- Excellent communication skills in English (written and verbal) and preferably also Dutch or willing to obtain these.

Conditions of employment

The UMCG offers an attractive working environment among inspired and committed researchers and good primary and secondary terms of employment. You will receive a temporary contract for a period of one year (29 hours a week), after which a permanent appointment will be one of the possibilities. Depending on the candidate’s profile, a suitable salary offer will be made. Your salary will be a minimum of € 4.080,- (scale 11.0 from 01-08-2022) and a maximum of € 6.337,- (scale 12 from 01-08-2022), depending on your qualifications and relevant experience, based on a full-time appointment. In addition, the UMCG will offer you 8% holiday pay, and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centres (CAO-UMC).
