UKrant is the independent digital news platform for the University of Groningen. Every day, we report – in both Dutch and English – up-to-date news and background stories.
UKrant consists of a small, close-knit group of professional journalists and approximately fifteen freelancers and student editors (including internationals).
UKrant is read by more than 6,000 employees and approximately 37,500 students. Especially the latter greatly relies on social media for information. Due to our colleague’s departure, we’re looking for a new social media editor for 0.6 FTE.
What will you be doing?
You know Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and other social media like the back of your hand. You instinctively understand which stories concerning the UG and its students are important and relevant to these platforms, and you know how to present them: not just in a proper journalistic way, but also provocative, surprising, creative, and representative.
You also regularly produce videos and are familiar with video editing software. Since we’re a news medium, you have to be able to do this quickly and under pressure, and you don’t mind working nights here and there. Extra points if you know your way around video animation.
You draw on the written work of your colleagues. Even when it’s complicated, you have a knack for transforming this work into something befitting the various social media channels, like a video, and Instagram story, a Facebook post, or all of the above. Above all, you have a pro-active attitude. You bring in ideas and topics, and you will be given the opportunity to work on these.
Naturally, you know everything about the latest developments when it comes to social media when it comes to both trends and technological advancements.
What do we expect from you?
You have a relevant degree from a university of applied sciences or higher, preferably in journalism or digital media, and you have some experience in the field of journalism
Together with the editor-in-chief, you will design a strategy for UKrant on how to develop our social media presence
You will make specific written and visual content for social media and you know how to transform traditional content into something suitable for social media
Your skills transcend a single form of media and you’re familiar with programmes such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere
You know all there is to know about the world of social influencers
You initiate and maintain interaction with the online community, mainly within the RUG but also outside of it
You are fluent in Dutch, both verbally and in writing
You are a hard worker, creative, stress-resistant, and a team player
You know what’s going on in higher education in general and at the UG and among Groningen students in particular
Proper command of the English language is an added advantage.
Conditions of employment
Contract length: 12 months.What do we offer?
We offer an interesting position in a creative, dynamic, and professional academic environment which is in need of some work when it comes to social media.
The appointment is for 0.6 FTE, for the duration of one year. Depending on qualifications and work experience, we offer a salary of a maximum of € 3,548 gross per month.
